Learn About our Comprehensive EFT Training Program

Learning to work effectively with emotion involves more than understanding theory and learning interventions. It also requires developing the ability to recognize emotional processes as they emerge in therapy and respond skillfully in the moment to facilitate therapeutic change.

The Greenberg Institute of Emotion Focused Therapy offers a comprehensive training program designed to support the development of both EFT knowledge and therapy skills through multiple learning modalities:

  • Foundational and advanced didactic training
  • Experiential “hands-on” practice (coming soon)
  • Skills-based workshops and masterclasses
  • Focused training in EFT micro-skills and micro-interventions
  • Expert-led observation and discussion of real therapy sessions
  • Expert-led video-based EFT supervision

Our workshops and masterclasses offer flexibility to meet different learning goals. Therapists can follow a progressive training pathway to systematically develop their knowledge and skills in Emotion Focused Therapy or select individual workshops and masterclasses to deepen, refine, or expand specific areas of their EFT practice.

Training is provided by internationally recognized experts in psychotherapy and Emotion Focused Therapy. Most workshops are offered live online, with recordings available for two months to support review, consolidation, and integration into therapy practice. Please review individual training descriptions for information about prerequisites, recording access, attendance requirements, and eligibility for continuing education credits.

Working with Emotions: Identify Markers to Guide Effective Interventions

Dr. Leslie Greenberg, Ph.D., Psychologist

Date: November 27, 2026

Time: 11:00AM to 2:00PM (Eastern Standard Time)

Many clients come to therapy because they feel stuck in recurring emotional patterns. Emotion Focused Therapy (EFT) uses evidence-based, marker-guided therapeutic tasks to help clients access, process, and transform the underlying emotions that maintain these patterns. Markers are identifiable emotional processing states that signal specific therapeutic tasks and interventions. Through detailed discussion and analysis of therapy videos, Dr. Leslie Greenberg will demonstrate how experienced EFT therapists recognize markers in real time, understand the emotional processes they represent, and select the interventions most likely to facilitate productive emotional processing.

Forming an Initial Therapeutic Focus and Case Formulation

Dr. Leslie Greenberg, Ph.D., Psychologist

Date: December 11, 2026

Time: 11:00AM to 2:00PM (Eastern Standard Time)

One of the greatest challenges in the early stages of therapy is determining what to focus on. Clients often present with symptoms, stories, and secondary emotional reactions, while the core emotional issues underlying their difficulties remain outside of awareness. This workshop teaches how to collaboratively identify core, unhelpful emotional processes underlying clients’ presenting concerns, establish an initial therapeutic focus, and co-develop an emotion-focused case formulation.

Emotion Awareness, Expression & Reflection: Universal Processes of Change in Psychotherapy

Dr. Leslie Greenberg, Ph.D., Psychologist

Date: January 13, 2027

Time: 11:00AM to 2:00PM (Eastern Standard Time)

Many therapists recognize that helping clients become aware of emotion is not the same as helping them fully experience it, express it, and make sense of it. For therapists, the challenge is knowing how to respond moment by moment to help clients access, deepen, and differentiate emotional experience so that it becomes therapeutically useful. Designed for psychotherapists from all theoretical orientations, in this workshop participants will learn how to facilitate emotional awareness, deepen emotional experiencing, support productive emotional expression, and use reflection to help clients develop new meaning and healthier identity and relationship narratives.

Through detailed, moment-to-moment analysis of real psychotherapy sessions, participants will learn the therapist micro-skills and clinical decisions that make two-chair work more effective, including how to deepen emotion, work through blocks and impasses, and keep the dialogue moving toward change.

Time: 11:00AM to 2:00PM (Eastern Standard Time)

Homework in Emotion Focused Therapy: Carrying Forward In-Session Emotional Work Into Everyday Life

Dr. Serine Warwar, Ph.D., Psychologist

This focused 3-hour workshop will show therapists how to develop effective homework that emerges from the client’s in-session emotional process and is guided by EFT case formulation, therapeutic goals, and principles of emotional change. Through real psychotherapy videos, participants will see how homework can be used across different EFT interventions to consolidate emerging change and help clients bring new emotional experiences and ways of responding into their everyday lives.

This focused 3-hour workshop will show therapists how to collaboratively map both resolved and unresolved two-chair work, with particular attention to self-criticism, anxiety, and self-interruption. Dr. Serine Warwar, Ph.D., Psychologist

Through teaching and detailed analysis of clinical video demonstrations, participants will learn how to facilitate the two-chair self-soothing process, evoke compassion, work through common challenges, and help clients move toward greater self-compassion, grieving, security, and resilience.

Through detailed analysis of EFT clinical video demonstrations, participants will learn practical micro-skills for recognizing when and how to use Focusing to deepen emotional experiencing and facilitate productive emotional processing.

Unfinished Business Series

Unresolved emotional injuries from important past relationships can leave clients stuck in longstanding hurt, anger, shame, grief, and unmet relational needs that continue to affect their sense of self and current relationships. In this free 3-hour workshop, Dr. Serine Warwar will teach a structured five-stage Emotion-Focused Therapy approach to resolving unfinished business, using videos of real therapy sessions to demonstrate the clinical process and key therapist interventions. Designed for therapists who want to learn or strengthen their skills in this area, the workshop provides a practical framework for helping clients process past emotional injuries and move toward emotional resolution.

Working with unfinished business does not always progress smoothly toward resolution, and therapists may encounter emotional blocks, persistent anger or blame, difficulty accessing painful memories, or other points where the process becomes stuck. In this advanced 3-hour workshop, participants will learn how to recognize these challenges and adapt unfinished business work using targeted EFT interventions for difficult emotional and therapeutic processes. Through videos of real therapy sessions, Dr. Serine Warwar will demonstrate the therapist micro-skills and clinical decisions involved in helping clients move through barriers to emotional resolution.

What happens when a client is trying to resolve painful unfinished business with a significant other, but ongoing interactions with that same person keep reopening the wound? In this focused 3-hour workshop, participants will learn a structured EFT framework for distinguishing past emotional injuries from current interpersonal issues and deciding when and how to work with each. Through videos of real therapy sessions, Dr. Serine Warwar will demonstrate the clinical decisions, EFT tasks, and therapist micro-interventions involved in helping clients move toward resolution of both past hurts and present-day relational difficulties.
