At the Greenberg Institute of Emotion Focused Therapy, we make the path to certification easier by providing a structured certification pathway, ongoing access to certified EFT supervision, and practical opportunities to support your progression toward certification as an EFT therapist or supervisor. As an institute recognized by the International Society for Emotion Focused Therapy (ISEFT), our trainings prepare therapists to meet the requirements established for EFT certification, and continue to deepen their skills through advanced workshops, masterclasses, and specialized EFT training designed to further develop and refine their practice.

Learn More4-Day Foundational Certification Training
This intensive four-day Emotion Focused Therapy (EFT) Certification Training provides therapists with the foundational knowledge and practical skills to work effectively with emotion in psychotherapy. Participants will learn to assess different types of emotional processes and understand their role in psychological distress, and use evidence-based, marker-guided interventions to facilitate meaningful and lasting therapeutic change.
Through didactic lectures on therapy demonstrated by examples using real therapy videos, video discussions of therapist interventiona and client process, case discussions, and extensive supervised practice in small breakout groups, participants develop both a conceptual understanding of EFT and practical experience applying core EFT interventions from the beginning of their training.

EFT for Individuals Level 2
Learn More4-Day Advanced Certification Training
This intensive four-day EFT Training Institute is designed to deepen participants’ competence in Emotion Focused Therapy for individual psychotherapy. Building on Level 1, the institute focuses on refining emotion-focused interventions and developing greater confidence in working with complex emotional processes.
Training includes advanced work with self-interruption, anxiety, depression, self-criticism, emotion regulation, self-soothing, and advanced interventions in unfinished business (including age regression, imaginal re-entry and transformation, and amendments to the model for unique issues. Participants will also strengthen their skills in emotion assessment, identifying productive and unproductive emotional processes, and collaborative case formulation through the observation of videos of an extended therapy case across multiple sessions.
This highly experiential training combines brief lectures, extensive therapy video demonstrations, supervised small-group practice, live coaching and modelling interventions, as well as feedback to help participants integrate advanced EFT skills into their therapy practice.

EFT for Individuals Level 3
Learn More3-Day Advanced Case Consultation | Maximum 14 Participants
Level 3 is an intensive three-day advanced training and case consultation experience for therapists progressing toward EFT certification. Limited to a maximum of 12 participants, the training provides an opportunity for detailed consultation on participants’ own clinical work, alongside advanced teaching in EFT theory, case formulation, complex therapeutic processes, and advanced therapy skills.
Each participant is expected to present one or more video or audio recordings of their clinical work for supervision and group discussion and to prepare a brief EFT case formulation for the client being presented. Recordings conducted in languages other than English may be presented with English subtitles.
The small-group format allows for in-depth case discussion, individualized feedback, and close examination of the moment-to-moment clinical decisions involved in advanced EFT practice.
Level 3 fulfills part of the training requirements toward certification as an EFT therapist in accordance with the standards of the International Society for Emotion Focused Therapy (isEFT).
Prerequisite: Completion of EFT for Individuals Level 1 and Level 2.

EFT for Couples Level 1
Learn MoreDeveloped by Leslie Greenberg and Rhonda Goldman, Emotion Focused Therapy for Couples (EFT-C) is one of the world's most researched, evidence-based approaches to couples’ therapy. Building on the pioneering work of Leslie Greenberg and Sue Johnson (1988), this intensive 4 day certification training provides therapists with a powerful framework for helping couples move beyond conflict, heal emotional injuries, and build stronger, more secure relationships.
Unlike approaches that focus primarily on attachment, EFT-C also addresses identity needs, including power, self-esteem, shame, and vulnerability, giving therapists a comprehensive model for understanding and treating relationship distress. You will learn how to recognize and transform the emotional processes that maintain conflict while helping partners create new patterns of connection.
Throughout this intensive 4 day certification training, you will learn the foundations of the 5 stages and 14 steps of the EFT-C model, including recent advances in theory and practice.
Learning includes didactic lectures, video demonstrations, case discussions, and extensive supervised role-play in small break-out groups to build both conceptual understanding and practical therapeutic skills.

EFT Supervision for Certification and Advanced Skill Development
Learn MoreSupervision is an essential component of the pathway toward EFT certification and provides therapists with the opportunity to develop their skills through consultation on their own clinical work.
The Greenberg Institute provides ongoing access to certified EFT supervision, allowing therapists to obtain the supervision hours required for certification while receiving individualized feedback on case formulation, emotion assessment, intervention selection, therapeutic process, and the application of EFT interventions in their clinical practice.
EFT Therapist Certification Requirements
The Greenberg Institute certification pathway is designed to help therapists meet the minimum training and supervision standards established by the International Society for Emotion Focused Therapy (isEFT).
According to the isEFT, therapists wishing to pursue certification as an EFT Therapist must register as an isEFT member and reach Level C.
LEVEL A
Pre-requisite: Professional training in psychotherapy and accreditation as a mental health practitioner.
Complete EFT for Individuals Levels 1 & 2, and one of the following:
- EFT for Individuals Level 3*
- 15 hours of group supervision with 1 hour of direct supervision*
- 5 hours of individual supervision of work with at least 2 clients*
Outcome: Level A membership status with the isEFT, and name listed on the isEFT website.
LEVEL B
Pre-requisite: Completion of Level A training.
Complete at least 60 hours of clinical practice using EFT principles and skills with at least 2 clients, and at least 16 hours of direct supervision of this clinical work.*
Outcome: Level B membership status with the isEFT, and name listed on the isEFT website.
LEVEL C
Pre-requisite: Completion of Level B training.
Complete the Level C Certification Exam, an which is an evaluation of EFT skills used in 2 video-recorded therapy sessions with 2 different clients (one of which must include chair work), and a competent Case Formulation.*
Outcome: Level C membership status with the isEFT, and name listed on the isEFT website. Designation as a Certified EFT for Individuals Therapist.

Becoming an EFT Supervisor
Certified EFT therapists who wish to further develop their expertise may pursue certification as an EFT supervisor. The Greenberg Institute provides advanced training, supervision, and opportunities designed to support therapists in developing the knowledge and skills required to supervise the practice of Emotion Focused Therapy.
According to the isEFT, Level C EFT Therapists wishing to pursue certification as an EFT Supervisor must reach Level D.
LEVEL D
Pre-requisite: Completion of Level C training, and a minimum of three years of practice as a Certified EFT for Individuals Therapist.
Complete the following:
- Attend at least 2 masterclasses led by isEFT approved trainers
- Shadow or facilitate at least one round of Level A trainings (EFT for Individuals Level 1 or 2)
- 5 hours of direct meta-supervision of recorded supervision sessions†.
Recommendations:
- Attendance at an isEFT approved Supervision Training Workshop for a minimum of 18 hours.
- Attendance at the bi-annual training meeting organized by the isEFT board.
- Attendance of conferences and masterclasses on a regular basis.
Outcome: Level D membership status with the isEFT, and name listed on the isEFT website. Designation as a Certified EFT for Individuals Supervisor.

Advanced EFT Training and Continuing Development
Explore Advanced EFT TrainingsCertification is an important milestone, but the development of expertise in Emotion Focused Therapy continues beyond the completion of core certification training.
The Greenberg Institute offers advanced workshops, masterclasses, and specialized skills training that allow therapists to deepen their understanding of EFT, refine specific interventions, and continue developing their ability to work with complex emotional processes.

PATHWAY TO CERTIFICATION – EFT FOR INDIVIDUALS
International Society for Emotion Focused Therapy (isEFT) Minimum Training Standards for Individual Therapy
LEVEL A
Pre-requisite: Professional training in psychotherapy and accreditation as a mental health practitioner.
Requirements: Completion of EFT workshop levels 1 & 2, and one of the following:
- EFT workshop level 3*
- 15 hours of group supervision with 1 hour of direct supervision*
- 5 hours of individual supervision of work with at least 2 clients*
