A great deal of emotional processing can occur during EFT chair-work interventions. Clients may access and express painful emotions and unmet needs, experience emotional shifts, and transform painful maladaptive emotions into new adaptive emotions. Following emotionally significant chair work, collaboratively mapping the process can help clients reflect on what occurred, make meaning of their experience, and consolidate newly emerging changes that may initially be fragile.

This focused 3-hour workshop will provide an in-depth exploration of how to map EFT chair-work interventions following both resolved and unresolved therapeutic work. Participants will learn how to collaboratively reconstruct the chair-work process with clients, using their own words and experience to identify and consolidate the important steps, emotional experiences, needs, and changes that occurred. The completed map can then be used to develop relevant between-session homework that builds directly on the therapeutic work achieved in the session. Mapping can also help clients deepen their understanding of their emotional process, strengthen emerging changes, promote further emotional processing and resolution of chair-work interventions, and provide a bridge for carrying therapeutic work forward into subsequent sessions.

When chair work remains unresolved, mapping can help clarify where the client has reached in the process, identify what remains unresolved, and provide a focus for returning to the intervention in subsequent sessions.

Through detailed review of real psychotherapy sessions, participants will observe the moment-to-moment process of mapping chair interventions, with particular attention to two-chair work for self-criticism, anxiety, and self-interruption. Participants will learn how the completed map can be used to consolidate and strengthen emerging change, guide subsequent therapeutic work, and provide a foundation for individualized between-session homework.

For therapists who are newer to EFT

With the purchase of this workshop, participants will automatically receive 2-month access to a 3-hour recorded workshop with Dr. Leslie Greenberg introducing Emotion Focused Therapy. We recommend watching this recorded workshop before attending as it reviews foundational knowledge and skills to work with emotion in psychotherapy.

Learning Objectives

In this workshop, participants will learn how to:

  • Understand when and how to use mapping following EFT chair-work interventions to consolidate and carry forward in-session emotional processing.
  • Collaboratively map key components of chair work using the client’s own language and experience, including emotional responses, emerging needs, and new adaptive responses.
  • Use mapping to facilitate reflection and meaning-making, consolidate emerging emotional changes, promote further emotional processing and resolution of chair-work interventions, and carry therapeutic work forward into subsequent sessions.
  • Map unresolved chair-work interventions to help clients make meaning of and consolidate the work achieved, identify emotional responses, emerging needs, and stuck points, and end the session constructively.
  • Apply mapping to two-chair interventions for self-criticism, anxiety, and self-interruption.
  • Use the completed map to develop individualized between-session homework that builds on, strengthens, and carries forward the specific therapeutic work achieved in the session.
