Working with unfinished business does not always follow a straightforward path toward resolution. Clients may remain stuck in secondary anger, blame, or complaint, have difficulty accessing underlying emotional pain or childhood memories, struggle to engage in the empty-chair intervention, or experience the significant other as defensive, avoidant, or unwilling to soften. Clients may also feel guilty expressing negative feelings toward a significant other or encounter other emotional blocks that interfere with the process of resolution.

Unfinished business can become particularly challenging when emotional injuries involve abuse or trauma and are organized around fear and other maladaptive emotion schemes. In these situations, therapists may need to adapt the standard unfinished business intervention and integrate additional EFT interventions, including age regression, imaginal re-entry and transformation, and self-soothing, to access and transform painful emotional experience.

This advanced 3-hour workshop is designed for therapists who are familiar with the EFT unfinished business intervention and want to develop more advanced skills for working with difficult or complex clinical processes. Participants will learn to recognize stuck points and subtle micro-markers, work with client blocks, promote softening when the significant other remains defensive, and use targeted interventions to facilitate movement toward resolution. The workshop will also explore the use of two chairs for the significant other, case formulation to help clients process the impact and meaning of emotional injuries, writing exercises to support unfinished business work alongside therapy, and adaptations for resolving emotional injuries involving non-significant others.

Through detailed review of real psychotherapy sessions, participants will observe the therapist micro-skills, clinical decisions, and adaptations involved in working with unfinished business that is particularly challenging to resolve.

For therapists who are newer to EFT
