One of the most challenging issues that we face in working with emotion is identifying what type of client emotion is being expressed and how to respond in the moment most effectively.  What type of emotion is being expressed? Do I want to bypass this emotion? If so, is this emotion masking a more core emotion? Do I want to regulate it, deepen it, or both? Is this emotion healthy or unhealthy? If unhealthy, do I want to help the client stay with it in order to transform it? How do I make these important decisions?

What appears like the same client emotional expression can reflect very different underlying emotional processes that require different therapeutic interventions. One of EFT’s most important contributions to psychotherapy is the development of an emotion classification system that aids therapists to identify different emotion types and decide how to intervene most effectively.

This workshop provides an in-depth focus on assessing emotions in psychotherapy. Through extensive observation of clinical video examples, participants will learn how to accurately identify and differentiate emotion types, one of the most fundamental clinical competencies that can be integrated into any therapeutic approach.

This workshop is designed for therapists from any therapy approach who want to integrate emotion assessment into their therapy practice as well as therapists who have done EFT training and want an opportunity to deepen and refine their emotion assessment skills.

For therapists who are newer to EFT

With the purchase of this workshop, participants will automatically receive 2-month access to a 3-hour recorded workshop with Dr. Leslie Greenberg introducing Emotion Focused Therapy. We recommend watching this recorded workshop before attending as it reviews foundational knowledge and skills to work with emotion in psychotherapy.

Learning Objectives

In this workshop, participants will learn how to:

  • Understand the emotion classification system (primary adaptive/maladaptive, secondary, instrumental)
  • Recognize subtle clinical differences between emotion types
  • Determine which type of therapeutic intervention would be most effective
